A unique, seated, stripped back and intimate gig from Holly Rees
Described as Laura-Marling-meets-Courtney- Barnett, Holly Rees is a queer indie rock act based in Newcastle, UK. Rees has toured in the UK and abroad (including a mammoth 44 date stint in Canada including festivals such as Canadian Music Week and Calgary Stampede), and has received support from BBC Introducing, BBC 6 Music, Amazing Radio and more.
Starting her career as a solo acoustic singer-songwriter, Rees has found her sound in her full band line up - lovingly referred to by the band as “full band bash” - with songs full of honesty, grit and earworm hooks, and an energetic, fun, “nonsense-filled” live show to match.
After a busy 2022 of festivals, shows, and studio time hard at work on the next release (a full band EP), Holly and the band hit the ground running this year, kicking everything off with single, ‘Missing Out (Again)’, a full-band re-make of ‘Missing Out’ (a firm crowd favourite originally released on Rees’ 2018 acoustic EP ‘Slow Down’). A perfect celebration of Rees’ past and future, ‘Missing Out (Again)’ solidified Rees’ move from singer-songwriter to full-band indie-rock without losing any of the raw honesty that’s so loved in her songwriting, and has opened the door to the direction of new music.
The start to 2023 didn’t stop there either, seeing the band crowdfund a staggering £2.5k to put into a music video for new single ‘Careless’, directed by Zoë Murtagh and produced by Gadabout Films. ‘Careless’ sees the band take a slightly more political direction, a song about the importance of care, and of words, wrapped up in punk-rock grit and tongue-in-cheek lyricism.
With a new line-up and lots to say, Rees and band are hitting the road and worth listening out for. You’ll probably hear them coming.
