A Holland Children's Institute celebration honoring those dedicated to improving the lives of Nebraska's children and families. Each year, local honorees are selected to receive a Holland Heroes Award.
This year, we honor:
Regent Barbara Weitz is a visionary woman with a diverse background. She worked as a speech writer in Minnesota, a director of Christian Education for a local Presbyterian congregation, and a Social Work professor at the University of Nebraska. She received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Carleton College, a Master of Public Administration from New York University, and a Master of Social Work from the University of Nebraska where she serves as a Regent. Barbara has served this community in ways big and small. She and Wally are currently chairs of the UNO portion of the University of Nebraska capital campaign. As a gifted teacher, she has influenced many non-profit leaders and social workers in the community. All who work with her remark on her kindness and brilliance. Barbara is a wonderful source of compassion for the community and a true inspiration to her family.

Katie Weitz, PhD is a community advocate who is passionate about public health and democracy. After teaching in Chicago, Katie earned a PhD in Human Development and Social Policy and brought that holistic perspective to Omaha philanthropy. Katie recently transitioned to president of the Weitz Family Foundation, and is proud of the ongoing commitment to equity and investment in the whole community. Dr. Weitz serves on the boards of D2 Center, Education Rights Counsel and Avenue Scholars. Additionally, Katie is chair of the Only in Nebraska UNMC College of Public Health capital campaign and has been dreaming up fun ways to engage folks in the work. As the political season heats up, you can also find Katie carrying petitions for progressive ballot initiatives, hosting events for candidates, and running relational organizing campaigns to encourage young voters to make their voice heard! Katie is married to Tim Wilson and has two children, Simon and Levi White. During her free time she enjoys reading, writing and traveling.
