Dear Freedivers,We are delighted to invite you to freediving workshops and research conducted by the researcher Frédéric Lemaître.
________
The general aim is to gain a better understanding of narcosis in freedivers. If you decide to take part, we propose to measure:
- various anthropometric parameters (age, height, weight, % body fat);
- your lung volumes;
- various cognitive tests before and after your dive;
- a recorded interview (around 30 minutes);
The holistic approach considers the freediver in a global and integrated way. It looks at the different techniques used to prepare for freediving, whether mental or physical (Sophrology, pranayama, etc.), as well as the technical aspects of performance and the emotional relationships and feelings of the freedivers. This course will enable you to a) gain a better understanding of the different mechanisms involved in freediving, its risks and benefits for your health, and b) grasp the key points of the different freediving techniques (FIM, CWT and CNF).
You will be a partner in a research project looking at the phenological aspects of apnoea. The aim is to link what freedivers feel during their dives with certain physiological indicators and cognitive tests. You will be asked to carry out various cognitive tests before and after your apnea, an interview about your feelings and a lung assessment at rest.
Your data will be compared with that of top-level freedivers. All information collected is confidential, will be anonymised and requires your agreement to participate.

Who is Frédéric?
Frédéric Lemaître
Freediver, competitor and coach of the French AIDA team for several years, Frédéric Lemaître is also a researcher specialising in the physiology of extreme conditions and in particular the physiology of freediving. Author of several books and scientific articles and member of the AIDA International Medical Board, his research aims to gain a better understanding of the physiopathology and training of apnea in order to better prevent accidents and find applications in other sports or for health.
This study will be carried out by Inès Leferme, a PhD student at the University of Paris-Sorbonne under the supervision of Frédéric Lemaître, Researcher.
