About this Event

PLEASE NOTE: Tickets are currently available for GHF members as part of our GalvestonHistory+ program. Public sales open on Friday, October 8 at 8 a.m. Ready for your advance access?

Known for its exceptional acoustics, the breathtaking 1859 St. Joseph's Church opens its doors for three special handbell concerts. These Dickens on The Strand traditions sell out annually, so be sure to get your reservations in advance as seating is limited in this intimate setting.

St. Joseph’s Church is the oldest German Catholic Church in Texas and the oldest wooden church building in Galveston and was built by German immigrants in 1859. Now de-sanctified and managed by Galveston Historical Foundation, the gothic revival church is distinguished by its elaborately detailed coffered wooden ceiling, delicately painted wooden sanctuary, original pews, and hand-carved altars. GHF preserves the building as a museum and makes it available as an event venue.

  • Tickets are non-refundable.
  • Tickets do not include festival admission.
  • Walk-up tickets will not be available. Tickets are only available in advance online.
  • This venue is not wheelchair accessible. There are a small number of steps leading up to the entrance.

ABOUT DICKENS ON THE STRAND

For 48 years, Galveston Historical Foundation’s Dickens on The Strand festival has highlighted downtown Galveston’s Victorian-era architecture while providing a one-of-a-kind holiday destination filled with the sights and sounds of Charles Dickens’ work. This year’s event continues that tradition with new entertainers and events, returning favorites, and family-friendly programming. Learn more by clicking here.

For the safety and comfort of our attendees, pets, ice chests, scooters, skateboards, rollerblades, skates, Segways, and other recreational “wheels” are forbidden.

The festival is open rain or shine. GHF is not responsible for independent transactions between visitors and vendors. Parking is available on many streets, lots, and parking garages within easy walking distance of the festival.

We are committed to making Dickens on The Strand special needs accessible. If we can assist with arrangements, we encourage you to contact us at 409-765-3424 in advance of your visit.
