HMU Academy: Chainmail 101

About the Class

Indulge your inner dragon or dragon-slayer! Come over to learn the two-thousand-years-old craft of making a flexible weave out of shiny metal rings!
The class will include:

An introduction to materials and tools used.

• Learning to manipulate rings with pliers (not as easy as it sounds!)
• Making a band of European 4-in-1 chainmail weave
• A historical lecture throughout the class.
  You will walk away with:
• A chainmail trinket you've made, and/or enough rings to finish your project.
  Folks who would like this class:
• Crafters, knitters, historical re-enactors, cosplayers, costume-makers, dancers, dragons, knights, Vikings, and an occasional pirate.

Your Instructor

Niklaus has been making chainmail armor and jewelry for over 20 years, and has recently emerged on the scene to bring his craft to the masses.

FAQ: what should I bring?

Materials and tools will be provided, but you may want to bring a pair of smooth-jawed needle-nose pliers (beading pliers).

FAQ: what should I wear?

Wear what you are comfortable working in and don't mind getting lightly stained, pinched, or torn.

FAQ: any skill pre-requisites? (i.e., is this for beginners, advanced, everyone?)

This is a class for absolute beginners, with no previous knowledge of the craft or any experience with metalwork.

FAQ: can I attend solo, or do I need to come with a partner?

No partner is needed, but company makes it more fun.

If you'd like to sponsor a new member please have them apply as soon as possible. If they wait until a few days before the event we cannot guarantee they will be able to be approved in time.
