From Dr. Zha Blong Xiong: The Hmong/Mong language is on the verge of severe endangerment. A language that is considered “severely endangered” means that only about half of the community members speak the heritage language, but children generally are not (Lee & Way, 2016). Based on my observation (no data yet), most Hmong/Mong Americans who are younger than 25 years old (about 49% of the Hmong/Mong population, Xiong, 2024) tend to speak mostly in English or English only. Studies suggest that many young Hmong/Mong parents in contemporary society are speaking only English to their children (Lee, 2002; Moua, 2018; Xiong, 2019), and most second- and third-generation Hmong/Mong children are more likely to speak English to their parents and family members (Xiong et al., 2018). Indeed, McLit: Marathon County Literacy Council, Inc. (2020) predicted that by the end of the twenty-first century the Hmong/Mong language will completely disappear. To slow down this trend and preserve the Hmong/Mong language, my colleagues and I are initiating a project called “the Hmong/Mong RPA Writing System” to engage the Hmong community in Minnesota to improve, develop, and/or adopt a unified, standardized Hmong RPA writing system. We would like to invite you to join us at our Kick-off Event, which will be held at Hmong House on Saturday, January 18, 2025, from 1 to 4 pm (see attached Flyer and Project Brief). Thank you for your support in advance!
“Everything is connected to language. It is my desire and hope that as a global community . . . this generation will be known as the one that intervened for languages so that the world’s linguistic tapestry and cultural diversity was preserved” - Dr. Michel Kenmogne, SIL Executive Director
Light snacks will be served. Doors open at 12:30pm.
