Clown Hierarchy
This 6 days workshop is focused on Clown Hierarchy - the most complex and sophisticated of clown relationships.
In truth, it's a whole family of structures in its own right, as we will learn how it can be manifested in many different manifestations. White Face - August (and Contre-August), Master and Servant, Teacher and Pupil, Fast and Slow, etc can all be found here in multiple and surprising combinations - the main rule is that there is conflict within the relationship and the clowns are not equals. In fact they live in different worlds and have very different understanding of these worlds and of the other(s).
Most of the times, hierarchy is produced by differences between the clowns in their levels of intelligence and innocence. Most often, the higher the inteligence, the lower the innocence, and vice versa (with some exceptions, like with the eccentric characters).
Number 1 (in hierarchy) is responsible for the goal / direction and for what must be done; Number 2 follows their own impulses and pleasure and Number 1, derailing their plans. The most common result is the fall of Number 1 out of rationality, and therefore their return to innocence.
Knowing the rules of Hierarchy play, we can better be aware of what we are writing or playing - either in improvisation of material creation - and give it a clearer structure and inner logic. We’ll be expanding our artistic proposal instead of betraying it or blurring it with useless or contradictory information.
