Sleep, snooze, shut-eye – whatever you call it, we all do it. But what goes on in our brain whilst we're asleep?
About this Event

Join Dr Julia Harris, a world-leading neuroscientist specialising in sleep and Dr Ivana Rosenzweig, sleep physician and consultant neuropsychiatrist for this in conversation event, hosted by BBC's Greg Foot at the Francis Crick Institute.

They'll be revealing some of the very latest research into the secrets of sleep, and delving deep into some of the big questions...

? Why is our brain so busy when our body is resting?

? Why do we dream?

? How does sleep affect our memory and wellbeing?

Set your alarm, join us for some pillow talk and book now for our free event on the science of sleep.

Our panel

Dr Julia Harris studies how information is computed and stored in the brain. She is particularly interested in how sleep reshapes our neural connections, to consolidate memories and optimise information processing on a daily basis.

Dr Ivana Rosenzweig is a consultant neuropsychiatrist based at the Sleep Disorders Centre at Guy’s & St Thomas’s Hospital, where she is a Research Lead. She also heads up the Sleep and Brain Plasticity group at the King’s College London with the major research mission to generate new understanding of mechanisms behind serious neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Greg Foot is an award-winning science journalist, producer and presenter. He currently writes and hosts his popular weekly consumer science show (& podcast) "Sliced Bread" on BBC Radio 4.

Check out our exhibition Hello Brain!

Our events season allows us to take a deep dive into the themes brought up in our new exhibition Hello Brain! Why not come a little early, explore the exhibition for yourself, and chat to one of our scientists on hand in the gallery?

Hello Brain! invites you to step into the world of your brilliant brain where you can discover more about the billions of neurons and trillions of connections that come together to make you…you.

In this multi-sensory exhibition, you’ll be able to see, touch and smell the inner workings of your mind. From hallucinations and lab-grown neurons to memory and the enigma of sleep, discover how scientists are only just beginning to unravel the mysterious world of our brain.

The Crick Café will also be open in the exhibition space. Enjoy a drink and get crafty with our hands-on activities.

Accessibility

This event will have live-captioning, BSL interpretation and hearing loops available.

The Midland Road entrance provides step-free access to the Crick. A wheelchair-accessible door is located beside the revolving doors. There are accessible toilets and a Changing Places toilet in St Pancras Station.

There are five accessible parking spaces around the building: three on Brill Place, and two on Ossulston Street. For more information, visit the Camden Council website.
