Come celebrate 100 years of Hawthorndene with a fascinating talk by John Sandham, a leading horticulturist and former Living Collections Development Officer for the Botanic Gardens of South Australia. During his career, John played a pivotal role in managing the living collections at Adelaide, Mt Lofty, and Wittunga gardens, and has been a passionate advocate for horticultural education across the state.
John’s talk will delve into the history of the Government Experimental Orchard, which once stood on the grounds of what is now Blackwood Forest. For 60 years, it housed the world’s largest collection of fruit tree varieties. You’ll also hear the inspiring story of local residents who fought to protect the land from development, preserving it as the beautiful recreation park we enjoy today.
After the talk, join us for a delicious homemade soup and a relaxing walk through the forest with one of our knowledgeable guides, highlighting points of interest.
Please arrive at 10.30 for a prompt 11am start. The talk will run for approximately one hour. There’s no specific end time, so why not stay for delicious soups, browse through our history office collections and/ or enjoy a guided walk through the Blackwood Forest Reserve!
