This lecture discusses eighteenth century Chinese cityscapes at the Qianlong emperor’s court, focusing on spatial performativity in paintings and the sense of territoriality they convey. Notable works include Qingming shanghe and Riyue hebi wuxing lianzhu.

Cheng-hua Wang, a specialist in Chinese painting and visual culture, is Associate Professor at Princeton University
