Sacred Heart Church cemetery in Bowie is located on the site of a Jesuit plantation that dates to the early 1700s and holds cultural, religious, and historical significance. Work over the past two years has yielded hundreds of newly discovered graves—mostly unmarked, and many likely of enslaved or emancipated African Americans. A broad team of members of the church, the descendant community, the local community, and subject matter experts have collaborated on various aspects of this effort.Come to Belair Mansion on March 29 to hear from Robert Hayes of Sacred Heart Church, members from the investigative team, and the White Marsh Historical Society about these activities and the team's future plans. They will also be looking to solicit information from Bowie residents regarding documentation of ancestors, other historical recollections, and any information that will be helpful for the related research.
