Sharon Bosley will present the long and evolving history of the Bunker Hill Superfund Site. Mining and smelting significantly shaped the region’s economy and development, and she will describe how early industrial practices—common for the time—resulted in the release of lead, arsenic, and other metals into the surrounding environment, particularly through tailings disposal and smelter emissions. Sharon will provide information the Basin Environmental Improvement Project Commission (BEIPC), which was formed to coordinate collaborative cleanup and restoration efforts among federal, state, tribal, and local partners, guided by both scientific expertise, history, and community input.
