Balancing Act: Idaho’s Campaign for Women’s SuffrageThe delicate act of balancing competing interests drove the campaign for women’s suffrage in turn of the century Idaho. U of I Retired Emeritus Professor Katherine Aiken and Associate Professor Rebecca Scofield will share their research about the 1896 Idaho women’s suffrage campaign, and describe how varied philosophies, economic disparity, and a rapidly increasing population shaped the early practice of women voting in Idaho state elections. This lecture is based on their 2019 Western Legal History Journal article “Balancing Act: Idaho’s Campaign for Women’s Suffrage” and offered in conjunction with the MONI’s new Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit “Voices and Votes.”
