About this Event
Join us for a collaborative and scenic hike with the Montauk Library and the East Hampton Trails Preservation Society to learn about the history of Fort Pond Bay. The hike will start at Rod’s Valley overlooking the bay and continue along the Hither Woods Coastal Trail. It will be a moderate-paced hike for 3 miles with stops at historical points of interest. We’ll get various vantage points of the shoreline and learn about early Indigenous sites, where the Amistad landed, Montauk’s first fishing village and deepwater port, the Long Island Rail Road’s development of the area, and military occupation during WWI and WWII. We’ll continue through Hither Woods Preserve and loop back on Old North Road.
Meet at 10 am at the Edward Vincent Ecker Sr. County Park parking lot at the end of Navy Road. RSVP via the Library's Eventbrite, or to Aimee Lusty, Archivist at the Montauk Library, [email protected].
