Our Spring History Day gives you the opportunity to hear from four renowned historians in the stunning historical setting of Charterhouse School. Authors joining us on the day are:Clare Mulley: 'Agent Zo' tells the incredible story of the only woman to parachute from Britain to Nazi-occupied Poland, where she established a crucial intelligence network and couriered microfilm across wartime borders. Imprisoned and silenced by the post-war Communist regime, Elżbieta Zawacka is brought back to life by historian Clare Mulley.
Jonn Elledge: 'A History of the World in 47 Borders' is a fascinating history of the world told through the lines people have drawn on maps. Jonn Elledge is a New Statesman columnist and a contributor to multiple newspapers.
Luke Pepera: 'Motherland: A Journey Through 500,000 Years of African Culture and Identity' takes the reader through 500,000 years of African history and culture. Pepera will cover subjects including medieval African empires, oral literature, matriarchal societies and ancient trade between Africa and China.
Michael Calvey: 'Odyssey Moscow' tells Mike's story as an early investor in post–1989 Russia who for decades was active in supporting new enterprises there. But in 2019 he found himself thrown into Moscow’s notorious Matrosskaya Tishina prison on charges trumped up by local business rivals. As the White House and Kremlin argued about his incarceration, Mike was caught in a Kafka-esque trap, denied access to evidence proving his innocence. And yet, bleak though his prison experience is, he forges unlikely friendships with his six cellmates – mostly also victims of Russia’s cynical justice system.
Also on offer:
