Performing as the duo Sultana, Jon and Li Waterman will be bringing a unique version of their show, “History and Legends through Song” to the Buttonwoods Museum on Thursday, October 24th at 7:00pm. Songwriters Jon and Li weave history and original songs to explore real and legendary characters and happenings spanning nearly 5000 years of civilization. This version of the show, specially crafted for the Buttonwoods' audience, will include two brand new songs relating to the performers' hometown of Haverhill: one telling of the conflict among 19th century women in the shoemaking industry, and the other retelling and exploring the Hannah Duston saga. The program also includes songs and history relating to the earliest known author, Arthurian legend, the Old West, and more. The program is the second in the series "Live Music Making History Live." Jon has presented the first show of the series "A Journey Through the Roots of American Popular Music" in libraries and other venues around the country, both in person and virtually. The performances received enthusiastic reviews from those in attendance. Sarah Swifter, the Director of MAGMA in Gloucester, MA, where the program was presented in November of 2019 writes:
“A Journey Through the Roots of American Popular Music” by Jon Waterman is a unique performance experience combining music history, storytelling, and original songs inspired by his research. Waterman successfully transforms fascinating tales from history into an evening-length performance that feels personal, contemporary, and politically relevant. A must see for anyone interested in American history or American music!
