You may ask: Who is Andrew Talcott?
Captain Andrew Talcott was an American Engineer & West Point graduate that served as the Army Corps of Engineers - Superintending Engineer of the Dismal Swamp Canal 1826-1828 and of Fort Monroe and Fort Wool along with the then 2nd Lieutenant Robert E. Lee. Though he resigned from the U.S. Army in 1836, he continued to be a very active engineer. He was a member of the commission that established renovations for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was also the Chief Engineer for the Richmond and Danville Railroad from 1848 to 1855which would later become the Norfolk Southern Railway, which connected the Commonwealth of Virginia by rail – modernizing the state. Captain Talcott is buried in the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.
