The East Lauderdale Historical Society will be unveiling a historical marker honoring the history of the "Joe Wheeler Stare Park Negro Area" and Camp Drake, a Boy Scout Camp for African-Americans. Both of these were during the time of segregation and located within the current Joe Wheeler State Park Resort property. "Joe Wheeler State Park Negro Area" was the only State Park in Alabama for African-Americans during segregation.
The ceremony will be held at the First Creek boat launch near the restrooms. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy this special presentation.
