Conference Title: French connections and the birth of Auckland's Alliance Française.
Details: The 1880s saw a French cultural flourishing in Auckland - through Francophone arrivals, the circulation of French texts, and New Zealand's only French language periodical and French club of the time. Not only did this satisfy colonists' thirst for culture in a far-flung nation, it also provided a livelihood for several key Francophone players and set the stage for more formal cultural institutions. From political exile in New Caledonia to the formation of the Alliance Française, this talk explores the French cultural flows in Auckland of the time, and key figures who helped shift the needle from francophobia to francophilia.
🎙️ Speaker: Emma Johnson, book historian and PhD candidate.
