Historic Savannah Foundation (HSF), which is currently celebrating its 70th anniversary, will welcome The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation President and CEO Wright Mitchell as a guest speaker on Thursday, February 20 at the HSF headquarters, located at 321 E. York St. Part of the 2025 Historic Savannah Foundation Lecture Series, “The People, Places and Stories That Define Savannah,” Mitchell will discuss “The Georgia Trust: Saving Historic Sites.” Attendees are invited to attend a wine reception at 5:30 p.m. The lecture will start at 6 p.m.
In honor of Georgia History Month in February, Mitchell will provide an overview of The Georgia Trust’s statewide preservation programs and ongoing legislative advocacy. He will share updates on the status of formerly at-risk coastal Georgia properties that were once included on The Georgia Trust’s Places in Peril List, including the Kiah House, Berrien House and Asbury United Methodist Church in Savannah, Ga. as well as the Adam Strain Building in Darien, Ga. and the Hog Hammock Community on Sapelo Island, Ga. The Georgia Trust’s mission is to work for the preservation and revitalization of Georgia’s diverse historic resources and advocate their appreciation, protection and use.
TICKETS: Historic Savannah Foundation’s 2025 Lecture Series is open to the public. Reservations are recommended, as space is limited. Attendance is free for Historic Savannah Foundation members and $15 for non-members. ABOUT WRIGHT MITCHELL: An Atlanta native, Mitchell has served as President and CEO of The Georgia Trust since September 2023. He is a graduate of The Lovett School in Atlanta and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina and a J.D. from Emory University.
In 2005, Mitchell founded the Buckhead Heritage Society and served as the organization’s volunteer president for 10 years. Under his leadership, the Buckhead Heritage Society implemented numerous historic preservation programs and received the Excellence in Rehabilitation Award from The Georgia Trust in 2009 for the successful restoration of Harmony Grove Cemetery in Atlanta. Buckhead Heritage Society also brokered the deal with the City of Atlanta that allowed for the Randolph-Lucas-Jones House to be relocated from Buckhead to Ansley Park.
Mitchell currently serves as an emeritus board member of Buckhead Heritage Society and is a member of the Board of Trustees of The Lovett School. He previously served on the board of the Atlanta Preservation Center and was appointed to the Georgia Governor’s Mansion Executive Fine Arts Committee and the City of Atlanta Sesquicentennial Civil War Commission.
