Did you know that where the Georgia State University Library sits today was the gateway to Atlanta’s roaring red-light prostitution district? For this hybrid presentation-tour, we will meet outside on the corner of Decatur and Collins Streets in the heart of Georgia State University’s downtown campus. We’ll then go inside the Georgia State University Library for a presentation on the rise and fall of the bawdy brothels that lined Downtown Atlanta’s Collins Street from the late 1800s to the early 1900s—showcasing tantalizing tidbits from newspapers, census records, city directories, property records, maps, and more from the Georgia State University Library’s historical digital collections. Then, with the help of a virtual story map on our mobile devices, we’ll walk the streets (well, not like that!) and transport our imaginations back to those bygone days when sin and Southern hospitality went hand in hand.
