Explore the past, one story at a time!
History isn’t just about names and dates—it’s about the stories, people, and moments that shape our world. This quarterly speaker series brings that past to life through fascinating presentations from experts at The Filson Historical Society and the Mt. Washington Historical Society. Each session dives into unique historical topics, from quirky local legends to preserving your own family history. Whether you're a history buff or just curious about the past, you'll uncover fresh insights, surprising discoveries, and engaging discussions.
UPCOMING SESSIONS:
🔍 April 24, 2025 – Weird Mt. Washington with Lynn Martin
Every town has its oddities, and Mt. Washington is no exception! Kick off the series with local history enthusiast Lynn Martin as he uncovers some of the quirky people and strange happenings that have left their mark on this “Crossroads” town. Expect surprises, laughs, and an interactive conversation that might reveal stories even longtime residents haven’t heard.
📜 July 24, 2025 – Transcribing Family Documents: Where to Start with Patrick Lewis, PhD (Filson)
Have you discovered an old diary, a bundle of letters, or a mysterious postcard tucked away in the attic? Not sure how to preserve and share them? Patrick Lewis, an expert in historical editing and publishing, will guide you through transcription, annotation, and preservation techniques for family documents. Whether you have a single letter to start or an entire archive, this session will help you safeguard your family’s history for future generations.
⚕️ October 23, 2025 – Fighting for Health at Waverly Hills Sanatorium with Dr. Lynn Pohl (Filson)
Waverly Hills Sanatorium is legendary, but beyond the ghost stories lies a deeper history of hope and hardship. As a tuberculosis treatment center from 1910 to 1961, it was a place where patients fought for their lives while medical science rapidly evolved. Dr. Lynn Pohl explores the experiences of patients, staff, and supporters who helped shape the battle against disease in an era before modern antibiotics.
📷 January 22, 2026 – Archiving 101: Organizing and Caring for Family pictures are more than a photograph of a loved one; each image is a historical document. These photographs reflect history, they inform us, they change our impressions of our ancestors and tell the story of our family’s past. Yet, many family photograph collections remain tucked away in the basement or attic. Join Heather Stone Potter, Curator of Manuscripts, and former Curator of Photographs & Prints at The Filson Historical Society to learn more about how to get started with selecting, organizing, and caring for your family photograph collection and learn some valuable research tools along the way.
For ages 12 and up. Just drop in!
