Historic Chinese American Cemetery - Gravesweeping Day (Ching Ming Jie)

Come join us for a special day of honoring our ancestors at the Historic Chinese American Cemetery of San Jose. Gravesweeping Day, also known as Ching Ming Jie, is a time-honored tradition where we pay our respects to those who came before us. This in-person event allows you to connect with your roots and participate in a meaningful cultural practice.

This long-running event invites all community members to:

• Read the names of those buried in the cemetery, some of the first Chinese American pioneers
• Experience a traditional Daoist ceremony to care for those buried
• Eat a roast pig and other traditional foods for the event
• Burn offerings (in our tradition, we believe that the items burned will manifest on the other side for the dead to use)
