About this Event
ABOUT THIS EVENT:
Chartered by Queen Anne herself in 1712, St. Andrew's Church has seen more than three centuries of Staten Island history-- from the bloodshed of the American Revolution, to the division of the Civil War, and through unimaginable change in the following decades.
While we stroll through the headstones of this historic cemetery, attendees will be the first to enjoy never-before-shared tales from local history. Join us as we unearth the lives, deaths, and legacies of St. Andrew's permanent residents. During your tour, you will...
- Discover Staten Island's early colonial history.
- Learn about the bloody days of the American Revolution on Staten Island and a skirmish that left the church damaged.
- Reveal the vanished inscriptions of time-worn tombstones. Though wind and rain have taken their toll, we'll explain how this breathtaking poetry was preserved for posterity.
- Unearth stories about the people buried in this hallowed space.
- Meet the father of a saint: a man embroiled in a body-snatching scandal that led a crowd of two thousand to riot on New York City's streets.
- Hear about the tragic life of an ex-congressman whose "sensational" death gripped national headlines in 1874.
- Visit the Staten Islander who once saved Cornelius Vanderbilt's life, allowing the railroad tycoon to go on to become one of the richest men in American history.
- Contemplate the remarkable legacy of an enslaved man who rose from bondage into international fame.
- Hear a chilling tale about the nearby Latourette Mansion as you visit the family's plot in the cemetery, and find out why two terrified women fled the house in 1910.
And so much more! Unearth some of Staten Island's most interesting history at this unforgettable event: the first of its kind.
