“Photography is a system of saving memories. It’s a time machine, in a way, to preserve the memory, to preserve time.” - Hiroshi Sugimoto
For humanity, the camera lens is like our eyes. It is not only a tool for observing the world, but also capturing and presenting reality, transforming our visual experiences into tangible images. The instant the shutter activates, time is captured and transformed into an image, allowing fleeting memories to linger. In Hiroshi Sugimoto’s work, photography is more than freezing a moment—it's a method of recording and preserving the flow of time, even becoming a medium that transcends time itself. Through his work, Sugimoto prolongs time in the images, blurring the boundary between reality and imagination, prompting philosophical reflections on memory and perception.
This exhibition, co-curated by the Winsing Arts Foundation and Hiroshi Sugimoto Studio, features four series: “Past Presence,” “Theaters and Opera House,” “Seascapes,” and “Polarized Colours.” In “Past Presence,” Sugimoto captures iconic sculptures and paintings from Western art history, intentionally rendering the images blurred and out of focus. The existing details dissolve into a hazy impression, leaving only contours and gestures discernible. In “Theaters and Opera House,” he compresses an entire movie into a single frame, crystallizing the flow of time into a brilliant silver screen. Since the 1980s, Sugimoto has continuously photographed seas around the world, consistently composing pure images of equally divided sea and sky. His “Seascapes” series erases geographical and cultural distinctions. These works transcend representations of natural scenery, embodying poetic imagery beyond specific time and space. In the “Polarized Colours” series—Sugimoto’s first exploration into color photography—he probes deep into the essence of light through the interplay of refraction and shifting hues. Extending his inquiry into time and existence, this series reveals infinitesimal variations of color nearly imperceptible to the naked eye, eliciting ruminations on the authenticity of our visible world. Together, these four series demonstrate how Sugimoto challenges photography’s role as documentation, instead employing images as pathways to investigate perception and phenomena.
Hiroshi Sugimoto currently lives and works between New York and Tokyo. His retrospective exhibitions have been presented at prominent institutions worldwide, including the Hayward Gallery in London, the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. He has also held solo exhibitions at leading international museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, the Guggenheim Museum, Palais de Tokyo, and the Centre Pompidou—all of which house his works in their collections. Sugimoto’s artistic achievements have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Royal Photographic Society’s Centenary Medal, the Isamu Noguchi Award, Japan’s Medal with Purple Ribbon, the Praemium Imperiale, the Hasselblad Award, and the Mainichi Art Prize.
