Hindustani Flute Recital by Pandit Ronu Majumdar (Padma Shri)

SPIC MACAY Ireland in collaboration with ICMSI, UCD's Creative Futures Academy present Raag Tarang, an echanting afternoon of Hindustani Flute Recital by Pandit Ronu Majumdar (Padma Shri) at Trapdoor, UCD.

Padma Shri awardee and Guinness World Records holder Pt. Ronu Majumdar has played a pivotal role in popularising the Indian flute (bansuri) among the younger generation across the globe.

His composition “Samved”, presented at the Tansen Festival, Gwalior, entered the Guinness World Records on 15 December 2024. Pt. Ronu Majumdar was the composer and leader of the Largest Hindustani Classical Band, officially recognised by Guinness, featuring 546 participants playing a wide range of classical instruments.

India’s ace flautist needs no introduction to music lovers worldwide. By virtue of his phenomenal talent, Pt. Ronu Majumdar and the bansuri have become virtually synonymous. He is regarded as one of the most respected and influential flute exponents of the present era. A true style-maker, he has evolved a distinctive approach to raga presentation, blending Dhrupad gayaki with intricate laykari. He is widely credited with establishing the flute as a prominent and popular classical solo instrument. As Ry Cooder aptly remarked, “Ronu is definitely the Dr Feelgood of the Indian flute.”

Born as Ranendra Majumdar, Pt. Ronu Majumdar is a formidable presence in Indian classical music, both as a reflective musician and a scintillating performer. He began his training under the guidance of his father Dr. Bhanu Majumdar, followed by Late Pt. Lakshman Prasad Jaipurwale, and later the revered Pt. Vijay Raghav Rao. He was also fortunate to receive guidance from his grand-guru Pt. Ravi Shankar. Firmly rooted in the Maihar gharana, he has received numerous prestigious accolades for his captivating performances across the world.

Pt. Ronu Majumdar has also carved an enviable niche in contemporary and popular music, highlighted by his Grammy Award nomination in 1996. He composed the music for India’s first IMAX film, Mystic India.

In another landmark achievement, Pt. Ronu Majumdar conducted a concert titled “Venu Naad”, featuring 5,378 flautists performing on a single stage, once again earning a place in the Guinness World Records. In recognition of his immense contribution to Hindustani instrumental music, he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2014). The Films Division of India has also produced a documentary on his life and art titled Bansuriwala.

Harnam Singh Namdhari is a promising young percussionist of the Benares Gharana, specialising in tabla and jori, born in Sri Bhaini Sahib, Ludhiana, Punjab. He began his formal tabla training at the age of fifteen and belongs to a respected musical lineage as a disciple of Pt. Ram Ji Mishra, son of the legendary Pt. Anokhelal Mishra. His initial tabla taleem was under Pt. Rajesh Malviya, and he is currently receiving advanced and rigorous training from his father and guru, Ustad Harpreet Singh Namdhari. His jori taleem has been under Ustad Sukhdev Singh Sukhi, a disciple of Ustad Nihal Singh.

Deeply influenced by the spiritual and musical environment of Sri Bhaini Sahib, Harnam Singh has been nurtured within the legacy associated with Shri Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji, a place renowned for fostering distinguished musicians. He regularly renders Hazari at Sri Bhaini Sahib in the august presence of His Holiness Sri Satguru Uday Singh Ji Maharaj. Over the years, he has performed at several prestigious platforms across India and abroad, appearing in the presence of eminent exponents of Hindustani classical music.

Internationally, Harnam Singh has performed in the United Kingdom, where he participated in the SAA–UK Festival and played tabla in the presence of Pt. Sanju Sahai, the renowned maestro of the Benares Gharana. He has also represented Indian classical music in Australia through various cultural and musical events. In India, his notable performances include appearances at the Sri Satguru Jagjit Singh Ji Sangeet Sammelan, the Barsi of Pt. Kishan Maharaj, and the SAPTAK Online Festival, where he presented a solo tabla recital. He has also performed tabla solo in the presence of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, and has performed before distinguished musicians such as Pt. Rajan Mishra, Pt. Sajan Mishra, Pt. Yogesh Samsi, and Pt. Sanju Sahai. He has also had the opportunity to accompany Pt. Sajan Mishra Ji at a SPIC MACAY event in Jammu, further marking his growing presence on the Indian classical music stage.
