Hilton Schilder Releases 46th Album Crooks and Nannies with Heritage Month Concert at Artscape
Cape Town | 23 September 2025
South Africa’s living #jazzlegend #HiltonSchilder will celebrate the release of his landmark 46th album, Crooks and Nannies, with a special #HeritageMonth concert at #Artscape Theatre on 23 September 2025. This performance marks a significant moment in the career of one of the country’s most innovative and prolific musicians, whose artistry has defined and carried forward the sound of #CapeTown #jazz for more than four decades.
Hilton’s contribution to South African music history is immeasurable. From his pioneering work with ensembles such as The Genuines, African Dream, Iconoclast, and Sons of Table Mountain, to his extensive solo career, he has preserved, expanded, and redefined the traditions of #Capejazz, #goema, and #improvisationalmusic. His music is both a celebration of heritage and a daring push into new sonic landscapes.
With #Crooks&Nannies, Hilton continues this journey, drawing deeply from ancestral memory while embracing collaboration with a new generation of musicians. His current quintet — featuring @ShaheemaLakay (violin), @Clayton Norman Pretorius (bass), @Kurt Bowers (drums), and @Ruby Truter (vocals) — highlights his dedication to intergenerational mentorship and ensuring the continued evolution of South African jazz.
“This album is about the stories we inherit and the ones we create for the future,” says Hilton. “I’ve always believed music is not just about sound, but about memory, legacy, and community.”
Following the Artscape launch, Hilton plans to take Crooks and Nannies on a national tour to Durban and Johannesburg, pending sponsorship confirmation. Venue partnerships are currently being secured to make this possible, ensuring that audiences beyond Cape Town can experience the work of an artist whose dedication and contribution to South Africa’s cultural life remains unparalleled.
Presented by the TransAtlantic Jazz Exchange (NPO), this project reflects a commitment to celebrating Hilton Schilder’s legacy while fostering the next generation of South African musicians.
