Learn how to navigate with a map and compass with lots of hands-on practice on the lower slopes of Ben Lomond.
About this Event

This one day course will provide you with an introduction in how to navigate in open hill country using a map and compass.

If you're a beginner wanting to get to grips with the basics, or lacking confidence and want to brush up on skills, this course will be ideal. We'll spend an hour or two indoors first, before heading out onto the mid slopes of Ben Lomond, well away from the paths.

This course will involve walking uphill for approximately 2 miles over rough and at times steep terrain, with a total distance of between 3 and 4 miles, so a good level of fitness is required.

Please bring your own compass, of either Silva or Suunto baseplate type (contact us at [email protected] for advice if you don't have one). It is also essential to bring good walking boots, waterproofs, hat, gloves, warm clothing, food and something to drink.

This course will not provide you with certification in navigation, but is led by experienced ranger staff who will make sure you leave much more confident with a map and compass than you arrive.
