About this Event

Born Hilary Mwelwa in Lusaka, Zambia she relocated to London with her family at age five. As a child she shared her father’s love of music, growing up in a home immersed with the sounds of traditional Zambian music along with American R&B/soul icons such as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. Hilary has appeared at great events and venues around the world such as Glastonbury, Jools Holland, The Drum Rhythm festival in Scandinavia, Jazz Café (Camden, London), Capital Jazz Festival Washington, SOB’S (New York) alongside an array of great artists and musical legends such as James Brown, D’Angelo, Angie Stone, Brand New Heavies, Macy Gray, Isaac Hayes, Donell Jones, Boyz II Men, Lalah Hathaway, Rashaan Patterson, Calvin Richardson, Joe Thomas, and K-Ci from Jodeci amongst others. Apart from performing alongside some musical greats, Hilary has also co-written songs with some current chart-topping artists such as Jessie J and Katy B.

From underground smash hits like “Smile”, “Pieces” and “Strictly A Vibe Thing”, to more commercial hits like her covers of the Aretha Franklin classic “Until You Come Back To Me” and The Isley Brothers' “For The Love Of You”, Hil's enchanting performances are winning new fans with every silky note. USA Today described Hil St Soul’s vocals as “Always enticing” while The Associated Press declared “Hil St Soul has an organic soulful sound that is all their own.” Hil St Soul’s Black Rose was the follow-up to the group’s critically acclaimed CD, Soulifidied which The Baltimore Sun praised for its “delicious creamy vibe,” and Blues and Soul Magazine heralded the CD as ‘the best urban album of the year’ and declared “Soulidified is as good as it gets.”Vibe Magazine described Hilary’s singing as “rich, velvety voice that warms the inside like a spot of tea” and The Boston Globe described her voice as “a beguiling set of pipes with a whiff of Whitney here, a scoop of Chaka there...” Copasetik & Cool Garnered a Top 20 slot on the Urban Adult Contemporary (AC) Charts with the song ‘Pieces’ which acclaimed rave reviews and a performance on the Jools Holland television show.

"It's rare in the soul arena for UK based acts to genuinely give the Americans a run for their money, but Hil St Soul seem on track to do just that." BBC Music
