Spend the afternoon scouring the woodlands for an underappreciated and fascinating group of specimens: lichens. Lichens are not plants, but fungi that “farm” photosynthetic algae or cyanobacteria. The photosynthetic organism gets a place to grow, the fungus gets food produced by solar power, and we get to enjoy their wide range of colors and shapes!Strasser Woods State Preserve is a 40-acre tract of woodland within Des Moines City limits. Joseph and Elizabeth Strasser, who had owned the property since 1965, donated the woodland to Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation in 1981. The area was transferred to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in 1982 and dedicated as a biological state preserve. Management of the preserve was transferred to the Polk County Conservation Board in 2018.
What to expect
The search will be led by Dr. Jim Colbert, retired biology professor at Iowa State University. We’ll wander together, enjoying the scenery and sounds while keeping a watchful eye for lichens and other discoveries. Bring your curiosity and questions!
