Details: The rolling hills (not so rolling when you have to hike up them, just sayin') and stately oak glades of Kanipe Park are a reliable winter hiking destination when snow and ice keep us from the higher elevations. So here we are, hiking at Kanipe Park on what hopefully will be a wonderful winter day.Driving Directions: https://maps.app.goo.gl/kme7CtaFa5ZdRs7h6
Driving time: 30 minutes
Route: Yet to be determined
Trail Map: https://www.mildredkanipepark.org/maps.htm for a printable trail map
Distance: Between 5 to 7 miles, depending on the route chosen
Elevation gain: 1784 feet
Difficulty level: Moderately strenuous
Pluses: The oak glades are always attractive, whether there are leaves on the trees or not. The nearness of Kanipe Park to Roseburg will have us back at the meeting place by early afternoon.
Minuses: There are several uphill sections. The trail can be muddy, depending on the weather. Speaking of weather, it can be wet in December.
For more information call or text Penny at. 541-643-6413.
On the day of the hike: Meet at 8 am in the Douglas County Courthouse parking lot off of Fowler St., right behind the library building.
Bring water, lunch, and appropriate clothing for hiking.
If you are riding with somebody, be prepared to share gas expenses with your driver.
Please do not attend if you feel sick, are coughing, or have a fever.
The club hikes every other Saturday, rain or shine. Hiking is free, everybody is welcome.
