About this Event

Join West End Synagogue for 2024/5785 High Holy Days.

All are welcome!

We are delighted to reach out with information for all of you about our celebration of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur 5785, which will commence in the secular calendar on the 2nd of October, 2024. This year, our theme for the High Holy Days is “Ayeka/Hineni: Finding Our Way Together.” Nobody expected the year we’ve had to face. There is much that remains uncertain for us, for Americans approaching a consequential election, for Jews in Israel and the diaspora wrangling with the aftermath of October 7th, and for our entire global community faced with countless threats from climate change to increased authoritarianism. We know that in times like these, the only way through is together— with commitment, compassion, and collective care.

As in past years, we are looking forward to gathering at the Fourth Universalist Society on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Please read on for important information about how you can join us!

Services: At the Fourth Universalist Society at 160 Central Park West. Services will be hybrid/multi-access (on Zoom and in person) for members in good standing and for guests who have purchased tickets. We will also have a late afternoon picnic in Central Park on the afternoon of 2nd Day Rosh Hashanah open for members and guests. Please see the below schedule for specific timing for each service.

Schedule:

  • Oct 2 Wednesday at 6:30pm - Erev Rosh Hashanah service
  • Oct 3 Thursday at 10am - First Day of Rosh Hashanah (10am Morning Service, 11:15am Torah Service, 12:45pm Musaf)
  • Oct 4 Friday at 10am - Second Day of Rosh Hashanah & Tashlich (10am-1pm, followed by 3pm in-person intergenerational Rosh Hashanah picnic with DIY Tashlich option)
  • Oct 11 Friday at 6pm - Kol Nidre service
  • Oct 12 Saturday at 10am - Yom Kippur (10am Morning Service, 11:15am Torah Service, 12:45pm Musaf, 2pm break, 4:45pm Mincha & Avodah, 6:15pm Neilah)

Tickets: Instead of fixing a price per ticket, we are asking for contributions (donations) from $36 to $360 per guest, based on your hybrid option and what you can afford. Our guideline is below:

  • $360 if you are able to help SUBSIDIZE others
  • $180 our REGULAR price
  • $90 ZOOM ONLY or if you’re joining us for the FIRST TIME
  • $54 if you are a STUDENT
  • $36 if you have LOW or NO income

We welcome everybody, regardless of financial situation. Donations can be paid here with credit/debit card or PayPal. A 2.5% fee will be added by Eventbrite.

Membership: This is a great opportunity to become a West End Synagogue member: your High Holy Days donation can be deducted from your 2024 membership dues (currently at $500 for members who join between July 1st and High Holy Days). New members also pay only 50% of their fair share dues in the second year (2025) — with a minimum of $750, which already includes High Holy Days tickets. Click here to learn more about membership.

Zoom access: After you enter your donation amount, provide your payment information and answer some simple questions, you will receive an Eventbrite confirmation email, and will be automatically registered on Zoom for services. In the confirmation email you will find instructions on how the guests in your party should register on Zoom. A few days before High Holy Days, each registered guest will receive a Zoom email with the link to join services.

Children's and Family Programming: We will have opportunities throughout the High Holy Days for children and teens to gather for prayer, community, and creative learning. Please see the below schedule for specific offerings and reach out to [email protected] for specific questions.

  • Oct 3 Thursday at 10am - First Day of Rosh Hashanah (10am Crafts & Games, 11:30am Family Service & Lunch, 12:30pm-1:30pm Kids programming)
  • Oct 4 Friday at 3pm - Second Day of Rosh Hashanah (3pm Intergenerational Picnic)
  • Oct 12 Saturday at 10am - Yom Kippur (10am Crafts & Games, 11:30am Family Service & Lunch, 12:30pm-2pm Kids Programming)

We look forward to celebrating and being together as a community in the coming year. If you have questions or special needs, please reach out to Joan Erber, Synagogue Administrator, at [email protected] or call 212-579-0777, ext. 220.
