Hot Springs architect I. Granger McDaniel’s classic mid-century designs will be featured in this year's Garland County Historical Society’s tour of homes with historical significance.
The former offices of the father-son architects Irven D. McDaniel and Irven G. (I. Granger) McDaniel begin your tour. Having outgrown a small home office in the 700 block of Whittington Avenue, the architects relocated their practice to 800 Whittington Avenue. Completed in 1950, the walls of glass, simple geometric form, and large overhangs are features that would define the younger McDaniel’s future work.
Later owners divided the property into apartments maintaining separate floors, separate exterior entrances, and separate addresses—800 Whittington and 101 Daley Terrace. In 2024, the property was purchased by Sallie Westbrook, whose renovations include an interior staircase that unifies the two floors into a single-family home. The top floor now opens into an ultra-modern kitchen which introduces the design elements present throughout the rest of the home.
The Evans M. “Mac” and Alice Bush home, at 111 Daley Terrace Drive, is just to the north of the former McDaniel office. The home was a collaboration between McDaniel and “Mac” Bush, a builder who relocated to Hot Springs in the 1950s and opened his own construction company. The home, completed in 1959, features expansive walls of windows, original wood-paneled walls, and terrazzo floors. Nestled next to National Park land, the home gives a true feeling of “living in the forest” according to its current owner, Ellen Holt. The home was placed on the Arkansas Register of Historic Places in 2017.
Tours of the homes will be held on Sunday, September 21, from 2:00 to 4:00. Tickets are $75.00 per person and only 100 will be sold. This event is a fund raiser for the GCHS. We are not a government funded agency and depend on our supporters!
Purchase your tickets at garlandcountyhistoricalsociety.com , in person or by phone at the society’s archives at 328 Quapaw (501.32.2159) on weekdays from 9am to 1pm. We look forward to seeing you!
Home tours have very limited handicap accessibility and involve the use of stairs and walking on inclines.
