Hidden Color of Plants: Basics of Dyeing from the Garden

Sunday, October 12th 10 AM–1 PM

This workshop gets you started using plants as dyestuffs. LisaRuth walks you through the Alemany Farm landscape which offers a wide range of options to obtain hues from foraged and cultivated plants. Learn what is needed to set up your own basic home dye station, from supplies to fabric to raw material. Understand how to grow dye plants from seed. Draw color from dyepots using Alemany Farm's Dye Garden plants and experiment with ecoprinting. Take home a handy reference guide and freshly-dyed fabric. Meet other curious humans interested in bringing natural brilliance into their world.
Please note: This is an introductory workshop. If you have some experience and are looking for more advanced instruction, this workshop may not be for you.

LisaRuth Elliott, an Alemany Farm core volunteer since 2010, is a visual and fiber artist, historian, weaver and creator of textiles. Learn more about her work at and follow her urban and color making adventures on Instagram: @lisaruthcreates and @sfurbanwanderer

FAQs

What do I do if I cannot afford the suggested donation?

We encourage everyone to make an offering commensurate with your means, and in an amount that feels powerful to you - such gifts make workshops like these possible. We also do not want money to be a barrier to entry. Therefore our workshop is offered freely: please select the "Equity Admission" option if it applies to you. If you can afford to make a bigger donation, your contribution will support this opportunity for those with more limited available funds. We also do not want money to be a barrier to entry. Please contact us if you are not able to make a donation at this time.

What happens if it rains?

Rain will likely cancel and we will try to reschedule. If rain is in the forecast, we will be in touch with you a few days before the workshop with more information.
