It's that time of year so join us for the sixth Ethical Society Jólabókaflóð!What’s that, you ask? Jólabókaflóð (yo-la-bok-a-flot) is an Icelandic tradition, going back to World War II, that roughly translates to “Christmas Book Flood.” On Christmas Eve, Icelanders of all ages give each other the gift we all really want: a new book and cozy silence in which to read it.
How does it work? Easy! Give a book, get a book. This year, we're back at the Fox & Hounds Tavern, but will also be doing drop-off or delivery to people who can't be there in person on January 1st, for safety or schedule concerns.
How do you get in on this year's enjoyable new year reading?
1) Choose the book you most want to make sure another adult reads in 2024. This can be a book you already own, but don't mind sending off to a new home or a new copy (Left Bank Books, Subterranean, and The Novel Neighbor would be very grateful for your dollars!).
2) Follow this link https://tinyurl.com/jolabokaflod2025 and answer the questions by Monday, December 23rd, so we can make the best match for you and your book.
3) Wait patiently for January 1st when our álfar will hook you up with a surprise book, either in person at the Fox & Hounds Tavern or by delivery the first couple weeks of January.
4) Enjoy your new book the way the Islendigar do: quietly and safely at home, with sweets, drinks, and a fire (Youtube yule log totally acceptable).
Our magic extends to the efficient and attractive wrapping of books, so your book doesn't have to be wrapped when dropped off. If you want to wrap your own book, please make sure to put a sticky note on it, so we can makes sure it goes to the right person and doesn't accidentally come back to you! You can also include a note with your book for the recipient so they know why you loved the book.
If you want to participate but have any issues with dropping off a book or not being in the St. Louis area on January 1st, please just let us know.
Our goal is that after the chaos of the end of the year holidays that you will enjoy a good book to start the new year off and we'll all be reading quietly together as we usher in a a new year. That's the kind of Humanist Holiday magic we can all get behind.
Happy Jólabókaflóð, friends!
