Ashton upon Mersey is part of the township of Sale. It is a small village with lots of character and a great sense of community."Ashton" is Old English for "village or farm near the ash trees", suggesting that Ashton upon Mersey is of Anglo-Saxon origin. The township is ancient and is first mentioned in 1260.
