Eastwood House has been standing in our midst for around 190 years. Over the years, it will have silently witnessed its numerous residents celebrating weddings, enjoying parties and probably drinking a bit too much at balls! It will have seen its family members returning home from funerals and its walls will have heard them as they coped with other times of upset and trial. Local, national and international events will have been discussed and debated as the house was altered and extended over the years. It will also have witnessed the changing fashions and dress that its people were wearing throughout this time?
Will the house have shuddered with concern over the poisons in the dyes worn in the headdresses of women in the 1840s? Will the house have been able to cope with the oversized crinolines of the 1860s – were its doors wide enough? Will it have heard outcries of horror at the style of shirt worn by its daughters in the 1890s, or laughter at the ludicrous hairstyles of the 1830s?
Join Tracy Harrison Butler for a journey through the highlights of the history of dress as would have been worn by occupants of Eastwood House, and other grand mansions of the time.
