Selected works from the Otago Art Society’s Permanent Art collection. 40 unique artworks have been extracted from their hiding place tucked away in the depths of the Dunedin Railway Station Clocktower. These works will be displayed, some for the first time in 50 years, as part of the OAS 150th celebrations.
Works are by well-known artists such as H.V. Miller, John Charles Veitch, Fred O’Neill, George Chance, Mabel Hill, Shona McFarlane, Annie Baird, Alfred Henry O’Keefe, Myra Thompson, W.M. Hodgkins to name a few.
Since the establishment of the OAS in 1876 work of significance to the Society has been collected into what is known as the Permanent Collection of close to 200 works. Some of these are currently on show in the society’s Shona McFarlane Gallery.
The full collection has recently been reviewed by OAS member Kate Drummond and John Timmins of Moray Gallery, to provide information on their condition and “provenance” – especially in relation to their significance to Otago.
OAS are asking visitors to the exhibition if they have information on the history of each the works to add to their, sometimes little known, history narrative. Cards will be provided for this purpose to record comments.
These works will be on display until 20 June upstairs in the historic Dunedin Railway Station. Entry is free to the public 10am to 4pm daily.
The Heritage Collection Exhibition is supported by sponsors Aotearoa Gaming Trust and Cleveland Charitable Foundation.
Free entry, all welcome!
📍Open 7 days upstairs in the Dunedin Railway Station
