About this Event
The way we tell the stories of Black History often leaves Detroit’s story out.
When we learn about and talk about Black History, many of us do not instinctively think of Detroit’s history as a major part of the conversation. We may think of Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks and heroes like Dr. King and Malcolm X and that’s understandable. But it shouldn’t be understandable for the natives of The City of Detroit.
Crime lord Henry Marzette and his family shapes the history, and highlights the Spirit, of Detroit’s double-edge sword.
Henry Marzette is notably mentioned and respected as Detroit’s First King Pin, and arguably The First Black King Pin in the U.S., during the 50’s- early 70’s.
Marzette’s organized support with the Italian and Asian communities, and various municipalities, allowed him to reign in seated positions African Americans only dreamt of holding during that time.
The rise and fall of the auto industry, emergence of an African American middle class elite and social progress among African Americans in Detroit are centered in this forgotten history.
Please join Pavielle DeRamus for a trip down memory lane to highlight Marzette and his family's rich impact that influenced, and continues to shape, African American life in Detroit.
