About this Event

Sathnam Sanghera is an award-winning journalist and best-selling author. As a writer, broadcaster and columnist, his books and documentaries have explored how the legacies of empire continue to shape our politics and society today. His award-winning books include: The Boy With The Topknot: A Memoir of Love (2008), Empireland: How Imperialism Has Shaped Modern Britain (2021), Empireworld: How British Imperialism Has Shaped the Globe (2024) and Stolen History: The Truth about the British Empire and How it Shaped Us. He has been a columnist and feature writer at The Times since 2007 and has presented a range of documentaries including ‘The Massacre That Shook The Empire’ and ‘Empire State of Mind’.

In the second in our series of distinguished Hennessy Lectures, celebrating the life of the historian and cross-bench peer Peter Hennessy, Sathnam will be in conversation with the academic and broadcaster, Professor Jerry Brotton, about his latest book, . Described as a ‘groundbreaking and eye-opening book … written with wit, nuance and academic rigour’, Empireworld extends Sanghera’s examination of the legacy of Empire beyond Britain, to explore its continuing influence across the world.
