Eleven o’clock on Saturday, 18 May 2024 marks another simultaneous opening of two exhibitions at the Association of Arts Pretoria. On display will be Hendrien Horn’s 3D printed pottery as well as Cronjé Lemmer’s favourite and most popular collagraphs of the past 27 years.
Hendrien Horn’s life took a nasty turn when she finally grasped that she had pushed her body too far. A chest injury from overworking on her pottery wheel in 2019 halted Hendrien’s work abruptly. Being unable to create hand-made pottery works at the time, she pushed herself to explore other artistic avenues.
As an artist, Hendrien slowly started to change her perceived perception about technology and how it can be used to create art. The clay 3D printer, much like the pottery wheel, is a tool to fashion forms that explore clay in its purest form. She taught herself to use 3D design software. Working from her pottery studio in Pretoria, Hendrien now gives workshops and talks and hosts numerous courses for beginner potters and 3D clay makers online.
Hendrien is the first contemporary clay 3D printing artist in South Africa and has participated in numerous group exhibitions around the country. The use of technology in art can easily be seen as mass production. Hendrien has become unapologetic when it comes to her art and no longer feels the need to embellish her artistic processes. Her clay coil lines are left bare showcasing the intentionality behind her design decisions inviting the viewer to form their own opinion.
Her book Let’s Clay 3D Print! A Guidebook will be launched at the end of May 2024, featuring clay 3D printing artists and industry experts from around the world.
The exhibition runs until Saturday 8 June 2024.
