8:30pm.hemlock ('444' album release show) + Tenci
hemlock is the "phone-fi" alt-folk project of swamp-raised, multi-disciplinary creative force Carolina Chauffe, with beloved midwestern bandmates Bailey Minzenberger (Friko), Andy Krull (Red PK), and Jack Henry (Free Range) as the backbone and beating heart.
Serving partially as a vehicle for songwriter Carolina's avid diaristic & amateur archivist tendencies, hemlock hosts a prolific discography spanning hundreds of songs in just half a decade. Doggedly DIY, and more-often-than-not on the road, Chauffe returns to Chicago after a full year on "permatour" with a rare, long-awaited full-band reunion, in celebration of their new album '444'. This release, out October 2024, is a "best of, so far" of an ongoing phone-recorded, song-a-day-for-a-month project, with its 12 carefully chosen tracks recaptured, rearranged, and reimagined in eager collaboration with this all-star cast.
This is hemlock in a sonic horizon expanded - sometimes serrated, yet still so tender. Inside-out, heart on its sleeve, full of hope, beyond folk.
'444' is a pivotal moment in hemlockâs trajectory as an artist, but their music suggests it is also simply another token in the continuous practice of being alive.
Frontperson Carolina has also toured & recorded in such acts as Little Mazarn (2019-present), Babehoven (2022), Fran (2023), and Merce Lemon (2023).
They are a neighbor, a gatherer, and a hopeful for a free Palestine, for a free tomorrow for all. They will be a road dog for as long as they can, and a music-maker for as long as they live. They believe in miracles, and their favorite color lately is green.
