The Hemet Heritage Foundation which owns the Historic Santa Fe Depot property and runs the Hemet Museum, invites you to it's upcoming meeting and history presentation on Monday, April 14 at 6:30 pm. Location: Memorial Funeral Services 1111 S. State St. Hemet Riverside County Historian & Author Steve Lech will present the story of "Juan Bautista de Anza's Expeditions of 1774 & 1775-76 from Mexico to San Francisco". 2024 was the 250th anniversary of his first expedition.
Steve Lech will tell us about Juan Bautista de Anza’s overland exploration and colonization journeys of 1774 & 1775-76, the principal and original efforts to settle Alta California from the interior of Mexico. Steve will focus on the section of the “Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail” of the inland valley areas of Southern California.
Following Steve’s presentation, Hemet Jeep Club’s Carol Ledbetter will share the section of the trail from what is now Borrego Springs through Coyote Canyon, Anza, Bautista Canyon & the San Jacinto Valley) which led to the Hemet Jeep Cavalcade which started in 1949.
Biography: Steve Lech is a native Riversider who has been interested in the local history of Riverside County for more than 40 years. He has written or co-written 18 books on various subjects of Riverside County history, is the past chair of the Riverside County Historical Commission, and co-authors the weekly “Back in the Day” column for the Press-Enterprise newspaper.
