It is once again time for us to invite and welcome you to the highlight of the Gauteng biking calendar, namely the annual Hells Angels Poppy Day Run and Parade. This event is linked to the global observance of Remembrance Day, which commemorates the signing of the armistice that brought the 1st World War to an end.In South Africa, as elsewhere in the world, this commemoration is known as Poppy Day, and occurs on the Sunday closest to the 11th of November. This year that Sunday falls on the 9th of November.
The red poppy is a universally recognized symbol of remembrance for all armed forces members who have died in the line of duty, paying tribute to the sacrifices made on the battlefields, as described in the iconic poem "In Flanders Fields."
By participating, you are supporting the tradition of honouring those veterans, including the veterans of our own military conflicts.
ARRANGEMENTS:
This year's Poppy Day is on the 9th of November, and the event will once again be held at the Apex Military Base in Brakpan.
Participants on bikes will meet at the Hells Angels Joburg clubhouse at 3 Dollie Street in Elsburg from 08:00, and the bike procession will leave for the base at 09:00.
Attendees that are not on bikes, can proceed directly to the Apex military base. The entrance road to the base is on the corner of Athlone Avenue and Apex Road in Brakpan.
The entrance fee is R80-00 per person with children under the age of 12, attending for free.
Parade form-up is at 10:30. All participants in the parade and wreath laying must wear headgear e.g. beret or cap.
A practice session for those participating in the parade, followed by a braai, will be held on Saturday afternoon (8 Nov) to shake off the marching cobwebs!
