HELLO, DOLLY! is returning to the Amey Theatre, Abingdon School, from Tuesday 28th October to Saturday 1st November, fourteen years since AOS last performed the show in 2011!
Dolly Gallagher Levi is a charismatic and resourceful widow from New York who made her name, in her own words, as a “meddler” - matchmaking, dance instruction and mandolin lessons - among other things! Hired by Horace Vandergelder, the well-known half-millionaire, Dolly is tasked with finding him a suitable wife, although it soon becomes clear that she has other intentions!
While also trying to capture the heart of Horace, Dolly helps his two clerks, Cornelius Hackl and Barnaby Tucker, break free from their dull routines in search of adventure - and maybe even romance - in New York City. There, they meet milliner Irene Molloy and her assistant Minne Fay in a hat shop where a whirlwind of romantic complications and comic misunderstandings ensue.
Having orchestrated all the events of the day, Dolly brings everyone together at the elegant Harmonia Gardens Restaurant, where an evening of comic mistaken identities, surprise encounters and dancing unfold...
Based on the 1954 play The Matchmaker, by Thornton Wilder, this classic musical was originally directed and choreographed by Gower Champion and later produced for the Broadway stage by David Merrick and Champion Five, Inc. The music and lyrics are by Jerry Herman.
With classic songs such as 'Put on your Sunday Clothes', 'Before the Parade Passes By’ and the title song ‘Hello, Dolly!’, this is a classic show celebrating love, second chances and the excitement of life’s possibilities.
This production is an AOS favourite, having been previously perfomed in 1980, 1997 and 2011!
We cannot wait to say "Hello, Dolly!" once again this Autumn!
