As the final show we are announcing as part of our Fest-o-Matic series that stretches from April 23rd to May 5th, we are thrilled to showcase one of the most incredible talents here in the Crescent City. Helen Gillet is an award-winning cellist, live looping artist, improviser, composer and performer. And if that isn’t enough, please take our word for the fact that she is just totally badass!
Born in Belgium, raised in Singapore and Chicago, Helen was classically trained on the cello and was already experimenting with improvisational music prior to moving to New Orleans in 2002. She has only taken her music and art further since then, and has become one of the most unique and beloved artists in town. She can do it all – avant-garde jazz, French chansons, funk, alternative rock, and the bohemian flair of the Velvet Underground. We found out recently she can do a pretty good take on the Clash too! She has an innate ability to know just what to do in any musical setting.
For this show, she will be joined by the improvisational master Skerik (Garage à Trois, Galactic, Les Claypool) performing on the tenor saxophone, electronics, and voice.
