Helen Coats
Born in the Old Village of Yosemite Valley in 1927, Helen Coats passed away peacefully in Mariposa on July 15, 2025, at the age of 98.
Helen was the daughter of Hazel Telles (Paiute) and Henry Hogan (Miwuk). She was lovingly raised by her grandmother, Lucy Telles, in Yosemite Valley. Growing up in the Old Village instilled in her a deep sense of family, culture, and the value of community.
While working in a laundromat, Helen met the love of her life, Jack Coats. Together they began their legacy—building a family and dedicating their lives to helping others. Helen became a Licensed Vocational Nurse, and she and Jack were strong advocates for Native health. Through their efforts, they brought MACT Health Board into Mariposa, ensuring better care and resources for their community. Known as a true “power couple,” Helen and Jack were friends to all and never hesitated to help those in need.
Helen’s life was defined by kindness, love, and generosity. She was a mother not only to her children, but to many who came into her life and found comfort in her care.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Coats Sr., and her son, Jack Coats Jr. She is survived by her daughters Alveta Coats, Lisa Coats, and Pamela Coats; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren—each of whom carries a piece of her love and spirit forward.
Helen will be remembered as pure love and compassion, her spirit touching countless lives and her legacy continuing through her family and community.
The family warmly invites all relatives and friends to join in celebrating the life of this remarkable woman on September 27, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds. The celebration will be held potluck style.
