Did you know that there are more than 2,500 varieties of apples grown in the United States? Sadly, most of the varieties available at the local grocers have been selected for good storage or shipping traits rather than flavor. This presentation will introduce you to the world of heirloom apples not generally available at the grocer or nursery. You’ll learn the basics of orchard site selection, rootstock choices, and growing and training apples trees. Additionally, you’ll gain insight into the tools and techniques for grinding, pressing, and fermenting your apple juice. You’ll have the opportunity to sample various heirloom apples and view a home-scale apple grinder and cider press.
