Heidi’s Healing Journey
Please meet Heidi Liberato Ramsey and her husband Brent. Heidi's 13-year battle with cancer began when she was 40, after discovering a lump in her breast. What was thought to be a swollen gland, treated with antibiotics, the lump continued to grow and led to an ultrasound and biopsy that confirmed breast cancer. She was advised against a double mastectomy due to her age at the time, doctors opted for chemotherapy and radiation, which led to remission. However, the journey took a turn after almost five years when Heidi began experiencing severe back pain, initially misdiagnosed as arthritis. Further medical investigations revealed metastatic cancer that spread to her spine, threatening her ability to walk. Emergency surgery followed, including the insertion of rods and pins in her spine, and additional rounds of chemotherapy and radiation.
For the next nine years, Heidi's cancer continued to spread to her spine, ribs, liver, and other areas, including her thyroid. Despite extensive treatments and testing, including genetic screenings and numerous blood products, the cancer continued to mutate. Efforts to participate in a promising trial at MD Anderson were hindered by the nature of her cancer's mutation and issues with the available samples. After being told that she had no more options, Heidi found hope through a recommendation from a best friend in Arizona, who introduced her to Envita, a treatment facility with promising results. The downside remains, these treatment protocols are not covered by traditional insurance because of the customized nature of the planning and treatment.
Neither Heidi nor Brent, have ever asked for monetary assistance despite their hardships. With the mounting costs of her treatments, which can reach $13,500 per week for a 12-week regimen, they agreed to a GoFund Me campaign, reflecting their deep commitment to living fully despite the financial challenges. Their journey also reflects their commitment to community, as their restaurant, Bullchicks in Baton Rouge, has been a cornerstone of support for those in need, hiring individuals in recovery and those from marginalized backgrounds. Together, they believe in the power of hope, family, and a strong network of support.
Through it all, Heidi’s resilience has remained unwavering. A vibrant woman who finds strength in the fight, she continues to live with purpose, supported by her children, grandchildren, and close-knit family and friends. Despite the hardships, Heidi finds joy in spending time with loved ones, volunteering, and being a passionate advocate for second chances—whether through her work with animals or the inclusive, supportive environment she and Brent foster at Bullchicks. Heidi's story is a testament to courage, family, and the enduring fight against the odds.
Heidi’s story is one of incredible resilience, but her fight is far from over. She continues to follow and advocate for chemical-free holistic avenues into her conventional treatments and teaches and mentors others to do the same. As she continues her journey with metastatic cancer, the financial burden of treatment grows heavier. The road ahead includes costly homeopathic care that could give her a fighting chance, but she cannot do it alone. Your support can help Heidi access the treatments she needs to survive and thrive. Whether it's a small donation or simply sharing her story, your contribution will make a powerful impact. Together, we can provide Heidi with the hope she so richly deserves—because no price is too high for the gift of life. Join us in supporting a true warrior, a loving mother, and an inspiring community leader in her fight for survival.
To help Heidi raise the funds needed, I am planning this bowling event, which will include 3 games of bowling for fun, 50/50, raffles and goods for sale. Entry fee is $35/person.
