This 10-week course will comprise a 2 hour face to face class on Queen's campus, a pre-class video and supplementary weekly resources.
About this Event

Hebrew Level 1<h4>WEDESDAY 17:00 - 19:00 for 10 weeks</h4>

Course Dates: Wednesday 9, 16, 23, 30 October; 6, 13, 20, 27 November; 4, 11 December 2024

Course Delivery: This is a face to face class which will consist of a weekly 2 hour class together with supporting resources. These resources will include a 5-10 minute preparation video, focusing on a relevant language teaching point to the upcoming class and 30 minutes of online exercises to follow up on teaching in the online class. You will be expected to watch the video and complete the online exercises ahead of each weekly class. Classes will be limited to a maximum of 20 students. These classes are being designed to be interactive and engaging.

Learning Objectives: Word vocabulary of familiar, everyday words. Read/write skills – the ability to identify and write the alphabet letters as well as identify the sound of words based on vowelization. Basic sentence composition


Topics:

Week 1

An introduction to Hebrew, background and contexts; The Hebrew alphabet, letters and meaning; Pronunciation, forming words and basic introductory sentences

Week 2

Tone and register: Polite words and their function and position in the sentence; Final form letters: / ם, צ / ץ, פ / פ, נ / ן, כ / ך; Prepositional letters ; The Diacritic dot (Dagesh) – modifying pronunciation; Vowel sounds and vocabulary

Week 3

Consonants and vowels: the letters that are used as both; Contrasting sentences and connecting sentences using conjunctiveו ; Definite Article ; Prepositional letter ב ;Personal pronouns

Week 4

Singular to plural; Immeasurable quantities: how they express emotions; The differences between masculine and feminine forms in pronouns; The numbers 1-10 and days of the week; ‘Onomatopoeias in Hebrew’: words that mimic sounds

Week 5

Final letters of the alphabet: the guttural letters ; The dramatic effect of ‘the,’ and it’s connection to the definitive article ה ; Parts of the body ; Doubling nouns; Related vocabulary

Week 6

All about verbs: Are we human beings but human doing?; Verb’s origin: roots; Conjugating verbs using the pattern of BINYANIM; Past tense; Family members

Week 7

Introducing the present tense; Emotions unique to Hebrew that cannot be translated; Our senses; Animal vocabulary and sounds in Hebrew

Week 8

Future tense ; Comparing the 3 tenses; Colours; Transport

Week 9

Passive verbs: Is passive action possible or a paradox?; Differences between passive and active verbs; Basic geometric shapes and the metaphors that they serve; The fruit family; Clothes – are there clothes that are traditionally gendered?

Week 10

Listening and reading; Isolating words in sentences and filling in the gap; Review

Please note: In order to receive a certificate of completion, you must attend a minimum of 7 out of 10 classes.

Is there a minimum age to register for a Language Centre course?

You must be over 16 to attend any in person Language Centre course and over 18 to attend any online course.

What are the course fees?

There are different fees depending on registration type. All course fees are payable on enrolment. --Student fee: £20.00 --Staff fee: £20.00 --General Public: £88.00

Are these courses accredited?

A Queen's Certificate will be awarded to all students who attend regularly. A minimum of 70% attendance is required for certification.

In addition any current Queen's student can apply for Degree Plus accreditation. Degree Plus enables students to gain recognition from Queen’s for completing extra-curricular work related learning alongside their degree.

How often do I attend?

Classes, which usually last 2 hours, are held weekly, as far as possible outside normal university teaching hours (e.g. late afternoon, early evening, some are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon) and run for 10 weeks starting in October, January and April. You will also be expected to complete homework ahead of class.

Is my registration fee transferrable?

Yes, if you feel after your first class that the level of language is too high/low, you can transfer to another class, provided that there is available space.

Please note EVENTBRITE will charge 6% administration fee on all refunds

Before (and including) 25 September– full refund

26 September to 3 October (inclusive) – 50% refund

No refunds available from 4 October (inclusive)

All requests for refunds need to be made in writing to the Language Centre Manager and must be related to reasons beyond your control and supported by written evidence. These refunds will be at the Language Centre Manager’s discretion. All refunds, where agreed, will be subject to an administrative fee of £10.00 for QUB staff and students and £40 for members of the public.
